Generous people like you have helped the Zimbabwe Orphans Program (ZOP) aid thousands of vulnerable children in and around 64 schools in underserved areas of the country since 2005. Our 17 Orphan Ministers oversee the children’s welfare with foster home visits and interaction with schools. ZOP pays the children’s school fees, clothes them with required uniforms, and buys their books & supplies with the goal of giving them a real chance to succeed. The Ministers also provide spiritual training and help show the children and their community that Jesus loves them.
For some areas, ZOP has provided food such as maize, beans, lentils, protein mixes & cookies, Mahewu and dehydrated vegetable mixes from Breedlove Foods. Children infected with such notorious diseases as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS receive medical care and anti retro drugs at the Nhowe Mission Hospital or a clinic near their homes.
To meet the children’s spiritual needs, Orphan Ministers teach the Word in schools and foster homes, using World Bible School and other materials.
Every cent of every dollar donated to ZOP goes to support vulnerable children. ZOP’s overhead costs since the beginning have been paid by volunteers. Thus as more money comes in, more children are helped. Unfortunately, the need grows. In addition to the 800+ orphans we are currently supporting, with your help we are looking to expand our support to additional needy children. Will you join the 200+ donors who currently support this work? Will you be part of this life-saving, soul-saving work and bless needy children with your support?
How ZOP Began…
In 2005, a group from East Point Church of Christ was on a short-term mission trip visiting Nhowe Mission Hospital. While there, the head nurse, Sister Chaka, insisted that some of the group should go out and meet George and Anna Mahuda at their home. So Roy VanZant and Dr. Steve Lemons, along with some other individuals, went to meet the Mahudas. The Mahudas lived in the common land approximately 15 miles from Nhowe Mission Hospital. Upon arriving, the members of the group were shocked to discover that the Mahudas, who were both in their 60’s, were taking care of 17 orphans. While visiting with them, Roy noticed that six of the children looked to be of school age and so he inquired as to why they weren’t in school. When the Mahuda’s replied that they didn’t have money for the textbooks. After hearing this and learning that a textbook cost only 50 cents, the heart broken members quickly took up a collection to pay for the children’s textbooks books as well as some other needs. On the trip back to Nhowe Mission Hopsital the team was discussing the situation and determined that something must be done for other kids in similar situations.
When the team arrived back at Nhowe, they also discovered that there were five ministers who, despite having lost their financial support, were continuing to work spreading the Word. Seeing this as God’s providence and not merely a coincidence, the team decided to start supporting these men with the goal of evangelizing to their community and identifying students who needed assistance to attend school and so the Zimbabwe Orphan Program began.
